What to Expect When Detoxing

If you are trying to kick a drug or alcohol addiction, then the first thing that you need to do is detox. Once you stop drinking or doing drugs, detoxing will start. This can be a scary and dangerous thing to go through and ideally shouldn’t be attempted on your own. The best place to detox is at a rehab center where they have drug detox services. Why? Because a lot can happen to you, both physically and psychologically while detoxing. And having a medical staff helping you out can be a life saver.

Delirium tremens (DTs)

When your body is used to a certain amount of alcohol or drugs and you quit cold turkey, the first thing you can experience is what is known as the DTs. You’ll become shaky, sweating and nauseous. You may also experience heart palpitations. Hallucinations can also occur, both visual and tactile. DTs are not to be taken lightly – they can, in some cases, cause death if the patient experiences autonomic instability, including tachycardia, fever and hypertension.

Digestive issues

While detoxing, you may also lose your appetite and feel nauseous. There can also be bouts of vomiting and diarrhoea, sometimes severe, as your body gets used to not having any alcohol or drugs.

Mental anguish

Detoxing will also affect your mental state and some patients experience insomnia, anxiety and depression as their mind tries to not only deal with the lack of drugs or alcohol, but also tries to convince them to use again.

When you detox in a treatment center, you will still experience some of these symptoms. But you will be in an environment where there will be people who can help you through it and make the detox process as harmless as possible.

Funkmaster Flex and the Need for Speed

It doesn’t take an extensive background of knowledge in the history of cars or the complexities of mechanics to be able to appreciate a solid ride.  Sometimes a little bit of knowledge can go a long way, and too much about something can take the magic right out of it.  So it is easy to see why things that come naturally to some folks can be more essential and elemental.  But in the case with Funkmaster Flex, it’s a combination of street knowledge as well as extensive technical knowledge that makes him worth listening to.

This goes for the music as well as the cars.  There are equivalences between the two seemingly-disparate arenas that speak to origins of each.  Both car culture and hiphop culture are in the streets, the literal metaphor for the spaces where cultures and technologies meet and mash up to become something else, something altogether different and still consistent.  There is an integrity about a Jay-Z song just as there is an integrity about alloy wheels.  They seem to be entirely different things, where Jay-Z’s rhymes are vehicles for the song, and wheels are for carrying a vehicle, but they both have a core of self-expression that is entirely based on qualities and degrees of transcendence.

For Flex, musically speaking, it’s necessary to have the old and the new always close at hand simultaneously.  A local show with Wu Tang Clan can be an historic event, but a new, underground show by the reclusive kid up the block can also be as transformative, because hiphop is always moving in new directions, and always steps ahead of anyone’s capacity to perceive.  The new does rise on the shoulders of the giants who came before us, and it sometimes takes the energy and passion of the next generation to remind everyone about the roots that give birth to this, again, and again.  It is not, by chance, then, that he comes from the Bronx, widely celebrated (and often contested) as the birthplace of the music before the 70s even began.

The Bronx is also the place where culture expresses itself rhythmically in other ways, with tires rolling against the pavement, kumho tires proving themselves on these testing grounds after having passed the test of the track.  And perhaps it is a stretch to connect the two kinds of tracks in this way, but master djs are enormously dexterous and versatile, so that when there is a move from the air to the street, it is a reflection of an aesthetic, not a disjunction in meaning.  Culture moves constantly, and quickly, and it takes certain well-trained eyes and sensitive ears to capture the multiple tracks when they play at the same level.

STOMP for the Holidays

The holiday season is in full swing and if you don’t believe it simply turn on the radio or visit your favorite local store. This is an important time of the year to spend with family and friends. Although many of the holiday festivities are still to come—parties, shopping, family gatherings, and of course decorating your Ontario apartment —it is easy to get bogged down with busy schedules and not take time to enjoy the holiday season and a fun night out on the town. A quick look online can tell that there are many holiday concerts and musicals to choose from but if you really want to get your blood flowing and your energy up try STOMP!

STOMP isn’t just a show and it isn’t just music, it’s a true performance of a lifetime. The group began with 2 members back in the early 90′s in the UK and it didn’t take long for the phenomena to catch on. Within just a couple years they began selling out shows and performing internationally. In 1995 they began to make an impact in the US; being involved in several films, performing live, and winning numerous awards. Today, STOMP consists of two teams, one in New York and one tour group, each with approximately a dozen talented members bringing their unique talents to the show.

One of the things that really draws audiences to STOMP is their creativity and ingenuity. They don’t use traditional instruments. In fact their “instrument” list consist of brooms, lids, sand, water, and bananas –just to name a few. And they don’t just stand on stage and play their unconventional instruments. Their performance includes dance, acrobatics, and some serious coordination. The show isn’t just focused on one or two people either; they work together as a team to create the most unique show you’ve ever seen. They have definitely redefined the term “garage band”.

Residents and visitors to the big Apple can attend their standing show on Broadway in New York City. In addition, STOMP has several different tours running at different times in North and South America and Europe. Their current tour is running in North America from November 2011 till May of 2012. And if this hasn’t got you excited and ready to bust out of your apartment in Calgary, they will be in Calgary next week, Nov. 22-27, at the Jubilee Auditorium so you can come and experience them for yourself.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo 2011 is happening

E 3 logo

The Entertainment Electronics Expo (E3) is going on right now in at the Los Angeles Convention Center in California. E3 is an annual video game exposition or trade show that video game publishers and developers use to show off the latest and greatest upcoming video games. The expo official started today, but in usual fashion, many video game publishers and companies held pre-E3 conferences earlier this week.  At last year’s show Microsoft showed off the hugely popular add-on for their Xbox 360 console, the Kinect. Some of this year’s show big announcements so far include Microsoft’s Halo 4, the sequel to the worldwide shooting video game.  Nintendo unveiling their next console the Wii U, which builds upon the success and innovation of the original Wii video game console. And Sony revealing the new $249 price tag for their new mobile video game system the PS Vita. There have been dozens of other big announcements at the show but since we aren’t a video game blog we won’t be covering them here. Sadly, E3 is only open to members of the game development community and the press but that doesn’t mean there aren’t way to get in. However, if you really can’t find any way into the Expo then check out sites like Game Trailers and IGN, which are offering live streams of the some of the best announcements at the event. E3 is hosted by the Electronic Software Association and runs from today, June 7, to June 9.

Steve Wyrick has Brand New Magic Show at Hilton Las Vegas

Viva Las Vegas! The sin city is best known for its gambling, bright lights and flashy nightclubs, but the best part of Las Vegas is the shows.
When was the last time you saw a magic show? A magic show is probably not the first event you would think to book, but somehow, the magic shows tend to be the ones that are most memorable, most striking and most invigorating.
The illusions will make you question what is real and have you crazed to figure out “how they did it”. A night of tricks is definitely worth paying money to see. Well-skilled magicians will have you sitting on the edge of your chair and begging for more.

Steve Wyrick is an “ultra magician” and touts that his upcoming show will be the biggest and best yet. He has performed on “The Late Show with David Letterman”, Vh1’s “Celebracadabra” and TLC’s “American Chopper.” Wyrick’s shows are unreal and will have your mind spinning like a top. Some of his signature illusions involve making a jet airplane appear out of nowhere and making a helicopter vanish in mid air. Wyrick has performed at multiple hotels in Vegas and is best known for his show at Planet Hollywood. Wyrick will now be performing nightly at the Hilton Las Vegas, beginning June 29. With a new location and new set up, Wyrick is sure to fill the house and wow the crowd.

Steve Wyrick’s show is expected to be spectacular so if you have been looking for an excuse to have a little fun, then you will definitely want to see his show. Tickets range from $40-$125.

The 2011 French Open is On!

The 2011 French Open starts on Sunday, May 22, and will be broadcast on the Tennis Channel here in the United States, and marks the 110th edition of the tournament. The tournament will be held on the red clay courts of Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France.

Unfortunately though, the hopeful competitors for this year’s tournament have been plagued by misfortune. Two time French Open finalist Dinara Safina had to withdraw from the tournament due to back problems, and  both Serena  and Venus Williams are out with injuries as well. Despite missing some star talent this year’s tournament still promises to be an exciting event with top players like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Caroline Wozniacki  and Vera Zvonareva competing for the prize.

Visit  Tennis Channel’s website for a full schedule and to check your favorite player’s current score. Tickets for the event start around $200 and are on sale now and can be purchase from GoTicketsand the Roland Garros ticket site (in French); both sites sell tickets for individual days or the entire tournament in addition to travel packages.

The Lost Horizon Night Market looks ridiculously fun

Live at the Lost Horizon

The Lost Horizon Night Market is like a secret carnival, bazaar, and Burning Man all rolled into one, it’s the sort of event that just happens. You either already go the Night Market or just haven’t heard of it yet.  Newcomes are often surprised by the Lost Horizon Night Market and you’re unlikely to find the attractions at Lost Horizon anywhere else, they aren’t really the usual fair, but that’s exactly why it is so popular.  The Lost Horizon Night Market was co-founded by Mark Krawczuk and Kevin Balktick after Krawczuk opened a noodle truck at the 2008 Burning Man as a prank. The joke was on Krawczuk though as his noodle truck was a big hit and after seeing such success at Burning Man, Kruwczuk turned to Kevin Balktick to start the Lost Horizon Night Market in New York in 2009. Since then the Lost Horizon Night Market has grown to be a huge production with over 20 different attractions run out of the back of rental moving trucks, just like Kruwczuk first noodle truck. Some of the attractions at Lost Horizon Night Market include things like the Mission Impossible Truck, Smash Truck, Surviellance Truck,  and if you’re in New York, Mark Krawczuk’s noodle truck.

Any trip to the Night Market is guaranteed to be fun and unforgettable experience. For instance, before gaining entry to the Mission Impossible Truck people were charged with completing various missions assigned to them by a mysteriously masked man. If they completed their mission people could then try their luck at liberating one of the many cupcakes kept under guard by “lasers” and tripwires inside the Mission Impossible truck in true Tom Cruise style.  One of my favorite attractions at the Night Market just by principle alone is Mac & Attitude.

At Mac & Attitude, they only serve macaroni and cheese, but every bowl comes with a free side of attitude. The original Lost Horizon Night Market is still running strong in New York and since then it has spread to west to Oakland and San Francisco. Unfortunately, the schedule and location for the Lost Horizon Night Market varies. The most recent Lost Horizon Night Market in New York occurred on May 9th, 2011.

The 2011 O.Henry Pun-Off World Championships

“There was the person who sent ten puns to friends, with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh.  No pun in ten did.”

If that made you laugh then you might be in for a treat as the 34th Annual O.Henry Pun-Off World Championship is being held on Saturday May 21, 2011 in Austin, Texas. The O.Henry Pun-Off is a competition honoring writer William Sidney Porter where contestants compete for the top titles with spontaneous and original puns. The O.Henry Pun-Off is actually divided into two different pun competitions: Punslingers and Punniest of Show.

The Punslingers competition is a series of single-elimination rounds in which two contestants are given a single category and must think of the best pun that they can. The contestant with the lowest scored pun is eliminated eventually leaving one person to be crowned champion Punslinger.  In the Punniest of Show competition contestants present puns on stage and are scored by a panel of judges on originality, presentation, and content. Interestingly enough, the puns can be presented as stand-up comedy, music, visual piece or whatever the contestant can think of as long as it’s still a pun. The contestant with the highest score in Punniest of Show wins the competition. Don’t expect to see your favorite comedian though at the O.Henry Pun-Off, as its mostly just ordinary people with a perchance for wordplay; anyone can sign up. The competition begins at noon on Saturday, but the festivities really start at 11am with a barbeque, live music, and a vintage book sale.

The Pun-Off is being held at Bush Square at the O. Henry Museum, 409 E. Fifth Street in downtown Austin, Texas.  Admission and parking for the event are free.

Find out more about the O.Henry Pun-Off World Championship, or read more great puns at the PunPunPun site here

Canada’s Rockies

The Rocky Mountains stretch across North American and feature the Great Continental Divide. The northernmost segment of the range is known as the Canadian Rockies. It stretches from British Columbia’s Rocky Mountain Trench to the Interior Plains in Alberta. The actual end points are the Liard River in northern BC and the US border of Idaho and Montana in the south.

While some parts of the Rockies are known as the Canadian Alps due to their resemblance to European mountains, the wildlife and fauna here are distinctly North American. Unlike the US Rockies, Canada’s Rockies are comprised of limestone and shale. Some of the highest peaks in the range are Mount Columbia at 12, 293 feet and Mount Robson, at 12,972 feet.

Much of the Canadian Rockies is protected as national parks. There is even a World Heritage Site near Banff . The site encompasses four national parks that interlock with one another: Banff, Yoho, Jasper and Kootenay. An additional national park, Waterton, is not part of the World Heritage Site. There are additional provincial parks within the Rockies. In these various parks visitors will find mountains, lakes, valleys, glaciers, caves, waterfalls, hot springs, and an abundance of wildlife and native plants.
