The Lost Horizon Night Market is like a secret carnival, bazaar, and Burning Man all rolled into one, it’s the sort of event that just happens. You either already go the Night Market or just haven’t heard of it yet.  Newcomes are often surprised by the Lost Horizon Night Market and you’re unlikely to find the attractions at Lost Horizon anywhere else, they aren’t really the usual fair, but that’s exactly why it is so popular.  The Lost Horizon Night Market was co-founded by Mark Krawczuk and Kevin Balktick after Krawczuk opened a noodle truck at the 2008 Burning Man as a prank. The joke was on Krawczuk though as his noodle truck was a big hit and after seeing such success at Burning Man, Kruwczuk turned to Kevin Balktick to start the Lost Horizon Night Market in New York in 2009. Since then the Lost Horizon Night Market has grown to be a huge production with over 20 different attractions run out of the back of rental moving trucks, just like Kruwczuk first noodle truck. Some of the attractions at Lost Horizon Night Market include things like the Mission Impossible Truck, Smash Truck, Surviellance Truck,  and if you’re in New York, Mark Krawczuk’s noodle truck.

Any trip to the Night Market is guaranteed to be fun and unforgettable experience. For instance, before gaining entry to the Mission Impossible Truck people were charged with completing various missions assigned to them by a mysteriously masked man. If they completed their mission people could then try their luck at liberating one of the many cupcakes kept under guard by “lasers” and tripwires inside the Mission Impossible truck in true Tom Cruise style.  One of my favorite attractions at the Night Market just by principle alone is Mac & Attitude.

At Mac & Attitude, they only serve macaroni and cheese, but every bowl comes with a free side of attitude. The original Lost Horizon Night Market is still running strong in New York and since then it has spread to west to Oakland and San Francisco. Unfortunately, the schedule and location for the Lost Horizon Night Market varies. The most recent Lost Horizon Night Market in New York occurred on May 9^th, 2011.

Culture is a funny thing. It contains many parts that are usually hidden to those who are encompassed in it. Things like celebrations, ways of dressing and speaking, and rules of etiquette seem to be a part of the background of daily life. It sometimes takes an outsider to notice that there are such things as cultural practices, and sometimes it takes a migration to make these things visible.

That’s certainly one of the most striking things about the town of New Braunfels, where one can see German culture as it’s transplanted in Texas. There’s more to it than just Wurstfest , and there are many cultures that do make up the population of this fascinating place. But it is events like Wurstfest that make it so terribly interesting. Here, the celebrations are made with an awareness that this is a new manifestation of cultural practices, and the moment then becomes a lovely time to enjoy the old and the new in the same moment.

It’s a promising time to be in the town, because there are old world notions of neighborhood and neighborliness, along with a contemporary sensibility that embraces potential futures. It’s a good time for the community, and also a good time for New Braunfels Real Estate . Building on the old with a tradition of embracing the new is a marker of a wonderful moment in time.

It’s hard to find a voice in rock and roll as loud and true as Joan Jett’s, and there can’t be a better time to hear her play live and loud than this 4th of July. It’s a free show, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds for the San Diego County Fair . The fair’s been around a lot longer than rock and roll, but the history of each institution is pretty electric.

The fair began in the 1880s as an agricultural event, so that the farmers in the area could share secrets and showcase their successes. They added a racetrack in the 1930s, to generate more income. That was a fairly easy stretch, because the horses had already been shown at the fair since its beginnings, and the west coast is a spectacular place for races.

Joan Jett’s beginnings weren’t as calm and wholesome as a fair, but that’s rock and roll. The new biopic this year, the Runaways , goes through the early years in Jett’s career, and her band before she went solo with the Blackhearts. The Runaways were an experiment that went well, and ultimately went in too many directions at once. With the likes of Lita Ford and Cherie Currie in the lineup, there were plenty of arguments about the artistic direction, and the band split after just a few years of working together.

Meanwhile, Jett was off and running with her journeys into punk rock styles, and these turned out to be the perfect touch to her special blend of 3-chord classic rock. It gave her an edge that no one else could ever touch, and it will be a great thing to see at the free show for San Diego’s Independence Day . Locals will get a great treat, and out of town guests with bookings at hotels in San Diego are in a perfect position to take advantage of a rare opportunity.

Seeing the city of Geneva any time of year is a pleasure. Its magnificent climate is particularly attractive for those looking for the perfect European city experience. Comparatively mild winters still offer plenty of snow for skiing and other frozen kinds of fun, and the city offers some of the most cozy respites imaginable, with gorgeous accommodations and cafes that offer plenty of wonderful ways to warm up at night. The summers, however, are rather spectacular, with warm days and cool nights, and with a little bit of planning, can also include one of the most exciting festivals on the Geneva calendar.

Fetes de Geneve is nine days long, bridging July into August, and there’s truly something for everyone here. For music lovers, there are plenty of live open air concerts, featuring French and international pop stars, and a variety of musical idioms. The concerts are free, and this is an exceptional way to catch up on the international music scene, as well as get to know the crowds in Geneva. Travel in another country is always an adventure, and there are numerous chances to get a wider perspective on the world at large. This is the time to see how one particular city celebrates itself.

This year’s event will honor the Sultanate of Oman, furthering the international appeal of the fair even more. By almost all accounts, however, the final fireworks display is a key moment. This is true spectacle, and last year’s show lasted 55 minutes, making it the longest display of pyrotechnics in all of Europe. There are an estimated half a million people witnessing this particular extravaganza, and its display has been so consistently praised that the organizers are always challenging themselves to make it better than the year before.

It’s a stunning thing to see something in the presence of so many people, and there’s always an odd moment here where one realizes that this is something that’s shared with everyone else, and it’s free. It speaks remarkable things for Geneva.

Honolulu is an extraordinary place by any measure. It’s one of the most splendid places in the world to get in touch with the natural beauty of the earth and the sea. There are always new pockets of life in unexpected corners, making for an atmosphere that is always expanding and exploding, inspiring locals and tourists alike. For hundreds of generations this has been a very important spot in the health of the planet, and today it’s possibly even more elemental to the balance of all things. There are many attempts to preserve the wonders of nature here, and to limit the amount of damage that human presence can cause in Hawaii, and one of the most splendid of these for spectators has to be Kokua Festival .

This happens at the end of April, a gorgeous time to be in the Islands. Although, it doesn’t need to be said, any time Hawaii is gorgeous, really. That particular weekend, however, would be a great time to book a fabulous hotel , and make plans to enjoy. There are special deals for locals, and opportunities to help clean up Hawaii and to make it a better place, and for tourists, it’s a wonderful opportunity to learn about all the green efforts here, as well as the chance to check out some tasty music.

The Kokua Foundation is a non-profit whose main function is to support and promote environmental education in Hawaii. There is perhaps no better place on earth where the beauty is more precarious than here. There might be no better way to honor this than to gather with locals and listen to two days of excellent live music. There is a great feeling of community at this event, where the genuine hospitality of Hawaii can be seen from an inside view. This year will see Kokua Foundation’s own Jack Johnson, along with Ziggy Marley, Anuhea, Jake Shimabukuro, and Taj Mahal, among others. It’s two days, and tickets are necessary for each day, but well worth it.
