One of the biggest concerts this summer will be this one, if you are going to be in New York around that time you are not going to want to miss it. These three bands define being a cult classic and having Pavement come back for a reunion tour is amazing. The great thing is that they will have had a lot of time to become a little more polished by the time they get to New York. If you do not live in New York you may still want to try to see at least one of these bands, but as far as can be understood they are not touring together, so you will have to be in New York if you want to see all three together.

Green Day for London
London is disputed to be the punk rock center of the universe, vying for the spot against NYC and Brisbane, and none of the three places ever really wins definitively. They’ve all hosted some of the leading figures in the history of the music, with the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, and the Saints, respectively. The moment must have been born in the same way that the printing press was, where each center of culture was sure this was the only place it could have happened, only to wake up the next morning and discover that no one is alone in the universe. That’s a hard shock for punk rockers, and it still stands as a difficult thing to contend with. In London particularly, when the movement was almost born out of a fashion statement, and one that was very quickly bought and sold to the next highest bidder.
So there are some who still don’t like Green Day ‘s place in the continuum of punk, and some who grudgingly admit that they have something to offer. For the rest of the people, the music is simply great fun, and there are plenty of moments when the great fun blends into real social critique, and then the roots of punk start to show through. However the entrance gate to the genre is protected or not, it will be thrilling to see them play at Wembley Stadium in June.
They’re also playing in Manchester, another key city in the history of music in the U.K., but the Wembley show is reason enough to book a hotel. London offers a chance to look into the history of all things, and when music starts to dovetail with contemporary events, then it becomes even more pivotal. Green Day actually has a history of its own, and one that is long enough to make them a peculiarity in punk, post-punk, or pseudo-punk, whatever one wants to call them. 23 years as a band is a very long time, and one that has enjoyed success since the early days is even rarer to find. But perhaps more exciting, their moves from a kind of pop punk to a more sophisticated level of experimentation with their own style has characterized their later years, and these are looking like the very best yet.
Jimmy Buffet Album Debutes Number Seven
It is pretty impressive when you think about it, but Jimmy Buffet’s album debuted this week at number seven. The CD is called Encores and it is a two disk CD with twenty two live renditions of some of his greatest hits. He personally chose which song he wanted on the CD and which ones he was ready to leave off, wanting the CD to tell a story in a convoluted way. While the songs may not always feel like they follow each other, they most certainly feel like they belong together. For him these songs are the ones that provide a happy ending to a musical meal.
Fetes de Geneve 2010
Seeing the city of Geneva any time of year is a pleasure. Its magnificent climate is particularly attractive for those looking for the perfect European city experience. Comparatively mild winters still offer plenty of snow for skiing and other frozen kinds of fun, and the city offers some of the most cozy respites imaginable, with gorgeous accommodations and cafes that offer plenty of wonderful ways to warm up at night. The summers, however, are rather spectacular, with warm days and cool nights, and with a little bit of planning, can also include one of the most exciting festivals on the Geneva calendar.
Fetes de Geneve is nine days long, bridging July into August, and there’s truly something for everyone here. For music lovers, there are plenty of live open air concerts, featuring French and international pop stars, and a variety of musical idioms. The concerts are free, and this is an exceptional way to catch up on the international music scene, as well as get to know the crowds in Geneva. Travel in another country is always an adventure, and there are numerous chances to get a wider perspective on the world at large. This is the time to see how one particular city celebrates itself.
This year’s event will honor the Sultanate of Oman, furthering the international appeal of the fair even more. By almost all accounts, however, the final fireworks display is a key moment. This is true spectacle, and last year’s show lasted 55 minutes, making it the longest display of pyrotechnics in all of Europe. There are an estimated half a million people witnessing this particular extravaganza, and its display has been so consistently praised that the organizers are always challenging themselves to make it better than the year before.
It’s a stunning thing to see something in the presence of so many people, and there’s always an odd moment here where one realizes that this is something that’s shared with everyone else, and it’s free. It speaks remarkable things for Geneva.
Roger Waters The Wall Tour is Growing
Rodger Waters announced some time ago that he wanted to do a tour to honor the thirty year anniversary for the Pink Floyd album “The Wall”. He has been setting it up, putting it together and has just now released another ten tour dates to the ever expanding calendar. The majority of the new tickets went on sale on May 10th the same day it was announced, but some of them are still set to go on sale May 14th and later. There is more than ample demand for the tickets and they are expected to get taken up fast.
Muse Coming to Amsterdam
For music lovers, there are few places in the world that have the same appeal as Amsterdam. It’s a city that’s unlike any other, really, because it’s progressive attitudes and funky local scenes invite a kind of rock and roll aesthetic that finds a fairly stable home in this uncertain place. It’s lovely, however, as funky as it might be, and the uncertainty is only due to the musings that are inspired by a rich cultural scene, and this makes it a pretty perfect place for a band like Muse .
They’re coming to town, well, nearly, to Nijmegen, later in June, as part of a world tour that’s been an astounding success. With each date, the band is getting better and better, and they’ve had some pretty remarkable moments on stage. Seeing them here will be a very high water mark, because the atmosphere in the Netherlands is one that helps to encompass the band’s progressive rock stylings, and it always seems as though the scene is about to break through to something that no one had thought of before.
A perfect summer adventure just might include a stay at a local hotel , enjoying the Amsterdam scene for a few days before making the hour trek to see the show. It’s a perfect warm-up in an international setting that’s ripe for experiment and opportunity to enjoy conversations in real and imaginary time.
The Goffertpark show will feature Ghinzu as an opening act, which is just one more good reason to go. It’s been an amazing year for the band. Piggybacking on all their previous success with a new album in 2009, released under their own production label, few expected that the new tunes would eclipse their previous sales, but it has, and this is the time to see the band, because if this isn’t a peak, then next year will offer another chance, and a reason for everyone to return.
Michael Buble Isn’t Surprised at Success
There has been a lot of talk about Michael Buble as of late. At the recent Juno awards he took home a number of the ones he had been nominated for. This came in the middle of his world wide tour that started last March and is set to continue on until sometime next year. However, he says that he didn’t really want to sing the songs that he put into his last album, not because they were bad, but because they were showing off the true him inside at that moment. It was a moment of complete openness with his audience, and while it didn’t take away the pains of the break up, it somehow made it a little less. He had a lot more to say as well, and some of it can be found here.
Ray LaMontagne On Tour In Boston
Ray LaMontagne is doing great with his eighth studio album coming out and getting ready to head back out on tour. This time it’s not a very large tour, but he definitely covers some ground fast. He will start off in Boston in August and will travel down through Arizona by September. Although it will be short, the tickets have been flying off the shelf since they went on sale, so if you want to see him, you are going to have to act fast.

New CD Release Wide Spread Panic on a New Tour
Wide Spread Panic has put out their new CD, Dirty Side Down, and set off onto a new tour. Ok, they haven’t set off quite yet, but they have the dates set out and they are ready to get out of there and meet some more of their fans. They did kick off the tour at the New Orleans Jazz festival, which they are invited back to often, and the tour plans on going on through July. Some of their songs are available for streaming on their website.
